Care of the orchard in March

With the month of March we are heading, in all Italian regions, towards the end of winter. In the south and on the coasts, temperatures can already be quite high; in the North and on the heights, even during the night, frosts become less and less likely. It is one of the most important moments of the year: the favorable weather and the presence of many pollinating insects, during flowering, are an indispensable starting point.

There are many jobs in the orchard: prevention of pathogens, fertilization, last pruning and grafting. Those in charge of the campaign will certainly not have time to waste!


Pruning and grafting

In almost all of Italy the bulk of the work should have been completed in February. The first ten days of March is still a valid period, especially if we live on high ground or if the weather has been particularly unfavorable and the trees are still dormant. We can also intervene on any root suckers produced by grafted specimens. At the end of the operations, remember to carry out a treatment with a cupric (possibly Bordeaux mixture): we will avoid creeping pathologies. It is still a good time to devote ourselves to grafting on most fruit trees: the ideal methods to apply are the split, the triangle and the crown according to our preferences and the specific specimen.
